This is perhaps the most invisible part of ministry, yet can actually make or break a congregation. At first, I resented my mom “forcing” me to take accounting classes at night at an “adult school,” then again in college. I thought, this may be her passion as an accountant, but what’s it got to do with running a church? It turns out the answer is a lot! Balancing a budget, hiring an office manager who knows how to allocate funds in the proper line item, and even coming up with a performance improvement plan are all part of church life. I have been fortunate enough to work as an Executive Director, where I learned all about grant writing, volunteer recruitment, and leadership development and applied them to the congregations I’ve served. Turns out I actually enjoy dealing with numbers and people now. Thanks, mom!
